Access control is the ability to permit or deny entry to your premises without requiring a key. Several major lock brands, such as Schlage, Kwikset, Samsung,Master Lock and others have recently extended this capability to the homeowner via electronic keypad access (pictured). Many of the locks allow several user codes. Advanced home access control locks contain magnetic sensors to auto-lock the deadbolts after the door closes. Several offer key override in case of battery failure, but others allow a 9V battery to "jump" the unit and give it enough charge to accept a code. Today's' home electronic locks go far beyond simple access. They can be controlled by your cell phone or the Internet, turn on/off or adjust the AC or Heat, and turn on/off lights throughout the home.

Why would a homeowner want electronic access?

• Never be locked out of your home again. Electronic entry means never paying a locksmith to let you into your home. You can install an electronic entry on a house door or a garage door.
• Have you ever given a key to someone that you regretted giving it to and then needed the key back? With electronic entry, you just give them a pass code. When you don't want them to have access again, you simply change the code.
• Do both parents of school age children work? Children often lose house keys and maybe you've even stashed an extra one in the yard just in case. With electronic locks, your child will never be locked out of your home.
• Do you have small children? To keep our toddlers in the house, we keep the deadbolts locked, but because of this my wife is always locking me out of the house while I'm doing yard work!Now I can just enter a code, and I don't have to remember to take my keys.
• Lastly, it's WAY cool! The neighbors will be envious :-)
