Improving Your Home's Security
How to Protect Your Home and Family
If you've just bought a home or are looking into improving your home's security, ACME Locksmith can help. There are simple, inexpensive things that will greatly improve your home's security.
You might be startled to learn that most home burglaries (more than 80%) occur by getting in through a home's door. Your door's security remains your best line of defense. Even home alarms only sound after someone has compromised your security. If you've just bought a home, the first thing you should consider is getting the home rekeyed. This process makes your current locks work with a new key. Anyone that had a copy of a key (the neighbors, baby sitters, pet walkers, etc…) can no longer access the home. You existing locks do NOT need to be replaced. Did you know that AZ ranks #1 in the country for identity theft? Does your new home have a community bank of mailboxes? Rekey your new home's mailbox for the same reason you rekey your home-to keep people with working keys from getting in. If you have a current working key, ACME Locksmith sells replacement locks. If you don't, contact your post office. Some will replace the lock for you at no charge, some will charge you, and some will send you to a locksmith. At the time of a home rekey, ACME Locksmith performs the service cheaper than all other solutions except the free service. Once you've eliminated past owners, and all that they've given keys to, from gaining access to your property there are other steps you may want to take. Have you heard of lock bumping? Lock bumping is a way for someone to gain access to your home without using a working key. To prevent this, you can: 1) Add bump proof and pick proof half deadbolts Advantage: Bump and pick proof, relatively inexpensive. If you have small children they will also prevent them from leaving the home unbeknownst to you. Disadvantage: Can only be locked from the inside, but as most home owners leave through the garage door, this issue is minor. 2) Switch to bump resistant and pick resistant locks Advantage: New technology that thwarts bump and pick intrusion techniques, the new lock finishes can improve aesthetics. Disadvantage: Mid to high cost depending on lock used. 3) Add anti-pick pins to existing locks Advantage: Very inexpensive way to slow down pick and bump intrusion techniques. Disadvantage: Not as effective as the new lock technology available. 4) Add high-security locks Advantage: Maximum lock protection with latest technologies and best products. Now available for homes. Disadvantage: Highest cost solution. Limited finishes. Sliding glass doors are also a common entry point for home intruders. Most people just toss a wooden stick down in the track and are done with it. Unfortunately, this approach is inadequate for two reasons. First, if the stick is not the right size or length, it is possible to jiggle it out using the sliding glass door. Secondly, sliding glass doors can be lifted off the tracks in order to gain access to your home. Wooden sticks offer not protection against this.
On the inexpensive end, a "Charlie Bar" can be added to the door. Think of a Charlie Bar is a "wooden stick" on steroids. First, it's metal. Second, it's secures to the door frame and to the sliding glass door when it is in place. This prevents it from being shaken out. It offers minimal protection against lifting of the door.
A better alternative is to install a sliding door double bolt lock. This lock can is placed above your existing lock. It has a bolt that secures the door from both the top and bottom of the lock. It is the only lock on the market that prevents the door from being lifted out of its tracks and it withstands up to 1000lbs of force.
