Does Home Depot Make Car Keys? Yes, No, and It Depends

Last Updated on June 10, 2026

Yes, Home Depot can cut and copy a standard car key, and that is all. It cannot copy or program a transponder (chip) key, a laser-cut key, or a smart fob, which is what nearly every car built since the late 1990s uses. Home Depot can only duplicate a key you already have, it cannot originate a key when every key is lost. For anything past a basic metal key, you need an automotive locksmith or the dealer.

Finding a reliable locksmith or a dealership to get a duplicate car key can take some effort, so many people turn to Home Depot, a one-stop for home improvement. But can they also make car keys? The answer depends entirely on which of the four kinds of car key you have.

The evolution of the car key, from standard metal to transponder and smart fob

The four kinds of car keys

There are four main types of car keys: standard keys, transponder keys, high-security keys, and fobs.

1. Standard keys

These are the most common car key and the easiest to duplicate. They have a simple design with ridges on the sides that match the lock cylinder, and are usually made of brass or nickel-plated brass. If you have an all-metal key, it is a standard car key. If your key has a plastic head, it may or may not be standard.

2. Transponder keys

Transponder keys add a layer of security. They contain a microchip that communicates with the car’s immobilizer, and the car will only start if it recognizes the correct transponder code during a handshake with the key. Because they must be synced to the car, they need special equipment to program.

3. High-security keys

High-security keys, also called laser-cut or sidewinder keys, have a more complex design, a unique groove milled down both sides or the center of the blade, which makes them much harder to duplicate. They started on luxury vehicles but now appear on nearly all cars. The equipment to cut them is far more expensive because they are milled instead of ground down, and they are usually transponder keys that also need programming.

4. Fobs

Fobs have, well, eliminated the key. Found in push-to-start vehicles, they rely on an electronic handshake to start the car. There is usually an override key to get into the car if the fob dies, but it is rarely needed.

The car keys Home Depot can make

Home Depot offers key duplication only. It can copy some car keys, but it can never originate a key when all of a car’s keys are lost. For that you need an automotive locksmith.

Home Depot can only copy standard car keys

Home Depot duplicates many keys, but it relies on traditional key cutters, so it does not have the equipment to cut a high-security laser key. If you have a traditional metal car key, they can take care of you. If it is high-security, you will need to look elsewhere.

Home Depot cannot program transponder keys or fobs

Home Depot has not invested in the car programming equipment needed to program a transponder key or a fob. They are focused on home improvement, so it may be an area they never move into.

How to get a car key copied at Home Depot

To get a duplicate at Home Depot, visit the key-cutting center in the store, hand over your original key, and they cut a copy on their machine. It is quick and convenient for anyone who has a standard key and needs a spare.

Alternatives to Home Depot for car keys

If your car key is not a standard key, or you have lost every key, here are the alternatives:

  1. Locksmiths. An auto locksmith focuses on locks and keys and invests in the tools for the latest key technology. They cut laser keys, program transponders and fobs, and can make a key by VIN when every key is gone. Usually cheaper than the dealer, and they come to you.
  2. Dealerships. A good option for high-end or luxury vehicles, since they have the key codes and programming tools for high-security and transponder keys. Dealer service is usually the most expensive route and often requires towing the car in.
  3. Key kiosks. Several kiosk services have appeared. They also only duplicate standard keys; for a high-security key they image it and ship a duplicate, and for programming they send a local locksmith to you. The catch is cost, they are basically a middle-man getting paid to send the locksmith, and they take their cut.

Bottom line: Home Depot can make a car key as long as it is a standard key with no chip or laser cuts. For a transponder, fob, laser-cut key, or a key made by VIN, see our car key replacement and automotive locksmith services. For house keys, see whether you can get a key copied at Home Depot.
