How to Reset a Kwikset Smart Lock (With or Without Code)

Last Updated on June 10, 2026

To reset a Kwikset smart lock, slide off the interior cover, pull out the battery pack, then press and hold the Program button while you reinsert the battery. Keep holding about 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the LED turns red, then press Program once more. That factory reset wipes every user code, Wi-Fi connection, and setting and returns the lock to out-of-the-box condition. You do not need the old program code to do it. The exact steps for the Halo, Halo Touch, and SmartCode models are below.

ACME Locksmith installs and programs Kwikset smart locks across Phoenix, and a reset is the fix for most “my lock is acting up” or “I just moved in” situations. Kwikset uses three different resets, and picking the right one saves you from re-enrolling every code for no reason.

Which Kwikset reset you need

Reset typeWhat it doesWhen to use it
Factory resetErases everything, like the lock just left the factoryYou moved into a home with the lock already on it, or you cannot finish setting up a new lock
Network resetRemoves only the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectionYou changed your router, internet provider, or phone
System resetRemoves all enrolled user codes and fingerprints, keeps the networkYou think someone has one of your passcodes

These procedures are identical across the Kwikset Halo, Halo Touch, and Halo Select (view on Amazon), and the same buttons and logic apply to keypad SmartCode models. The only real difference between models is where the cover and Program button sit.

How to factory reset a Kwikset smart lock

A factory reset is the right move when you inherit a lock with someone else’s codes on it, or a new lock will not finish pairing. Here is the procedure on every Halo and SmartCode lock:

  1. Open the door and extend the bolt with the inside thumbturn so the lock cannot lock itself during the reset.
  2. Slide the interior cover up and off. Some models have one or two small side screws, remove those first.
  3. Pull the battery pack straight up and out of the lock.
  4. Press and hold the Program button while you reinsert the battery pack.
  5. Keep holding for 30 seconds until the lock beeps and the status light turns red.
  6. Press and release the Program button one more time to confirm.

How to reset a Kwikset smart lock without the code

You do not need the old program code or any passcode to reset a Kwikset smart lock. The factory reset is done with the physical Program button, not a code, so a lock full of a previous owner’s codes resets the same way as your own. If you only know the lock by its keypad and cannot get into the menu, the battery-and-Program-button reset above is exactly how you wipe it without a code.

How to do a network reset

  1. Slide the interior cover up and off (remove the side screws first if present).
  2. Press and HOLD the “A” button for 10 seconds. After about 3 seconds you hear one short beep and see a blue LED.
  3. Keep holding until a second short beep and the LED turns amber.
  4. Release the “A” button. The amber LED blinks to show it is in reset mode.
  5. Press and release the Program button within 10 seconds to confirm, or the reset times out.

How to do a system reset

  1. Slide the interior cover up and off.
  2. Press the “A” button 10 times. You hear a short beep and the LED turns amber and blinks.
  3. Press and release the Program button within 10 seconds to confirm, or it times out.

What to do after a reset

After a factory reset, re-enroll your user codes and reconnect the lock to Wi-Fi and the app. If you moved into a home, also rekey the key override so the old physical keys no longer work. We can rekey it to match your other house keys during a lock installation or smart lock visit.

When to call a locksmith

If the lock will not reset, the bolt binds, or it keeps dropping off Wi-Fi after a reset, the problem is usually the install, not the lock. ACME installs and troubleshoots Kwikset smart locks across the Valley. See smart lock installation, or for a business, commercial smart locks. We serve Phoenix and the metro.

Kwikset Smart Lock Reset FAQ

Does resetting delete my user codes?

A factory reset and a system reset both erase all user codes and fingerprints. A network reset does not, it only drops the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection.

Will a reset change the keyed override?

No. The physical key is mechanical, so a reset does not change it. If you moved in, rekey the override separately so old keys stop working.

Why won't my Kwikset smart lock reset?

Usually the Program button was not held long enough, the battery is weak, or the confirm press came after the 10-second window. Use a fresh battery and follow the timing exactly.
