ACME Locksmith replaces cluster mailbox locks and makes new mailbox keys in Gilbert and throughout the Phoenix Valley right at your mailbox. You’ll need to show that you live at the address.

Locksmith or USPS? Who Owns the Lock
The compartment that holds your incoming mail is yours. That’s your mailbox. That’s the lock we replace.
USPS owns the carrier door, the one the mail carrier opens to access and load the whole bank of mailboxes, and the parcel locker locks. We don’t touch those. If your problem is a parcel locker key that didn’t get left in your box, that’s a Post Office call, not a locksmith call.
Some Gilbert HOAs own the cluster boxes in their community and have their own rule about who works on them. If yours does, check with them first. Most do not care who changes a resident lock.

What to Know
We verify ownership before we open or rekey any mailbox. That protects you, because the next person who shows up claiming your box gets asked the same question. Arizona doesn’t require it, we just do it.
Any one of these works:
- A driver’s license showing the property address
- A piece of mail addressed to you at the property, with a photo ID
- A copy of the lease
- A closing statement, if you just bought the place
- We can look you up in county property records, then match your ID when we arrive
If you can’t produce any of those, whoever can needs to be there when we show up. The full policy is here: how locksmiths verify ownership.
How We Replace a Cluster Mailbox Lock
The job is quick. Here’s the whole thing:
- We open the compartment door, either with your key, by picking it, or by drilling it.
- The old cam lock comes out from the back of the door. It’s held by a nut and a clip.
- The new lock goes in, and we set the cam so it throws the right direction for your box.
- We test it open and closed a few times with the door shut.
- You get the new keys. Usually two.
Here’s the whole swap on video, start to finish:

Rotation is the part people get wrong when they try this themselves. Cluster box cam locks come clockwise and counter-clockwise, and the wrong one turns but never catches the latch. We carry both at the shop and on the trucks, which covers the boxes we see around Gilbert.
Want to do it yourself? We sell the locks. There’s an old style mailbox lock for older boxes and a new style mailbox lock for most current USPS cluster units.
One catch nobody mentions. You need the door open to change the lock. If you still have a working key, DIY it. Come into our store or purchase a lock from us online.
If every key is gone, you’re either catching your carrier while the bank is open, or you’re calling a locksmith. That’s why most people end up calling us instead of doing it themselves.
Lost Key, Broken Lock, or Just Moved In
Lost key. If you still have one working key, bring the lock in or bring the key and we’ll cut copies. If every key is gone, the lock gets replaced.
Key turns but nothing happens. That’s usually the cam, not the lock. The clip backs off and the cam stops catching the latch. Sometimes we can reset it. Usually the lock is old enough that replacing it is the better call.
Just bought the house. Change the mailbox lock when you change your house locks. You have no idea how many mailbox keys the last owner handed out, and your mail is where the bank statements and the new checks show up. We do both in one visit. See home rekey service.
Want a spare? We cut mailbox keys at every shop. See key duplication.
In the Shop or at Your Box
Bringing the lock to us is cheaper, because there’s no service call. Take the lock off the door yourself and bring it into the Gilbert shop at 81 S McQueen Rd STE 102, near Elliot and McQueen, or any of our other locations. We rekey it or swap it while you wait.
Swapping a mailbox lock runs about $60 for the lock and the labor. If we are already at your house on another job, that is the whole cost, so have us do the mailbox while we are rekeying the house. If we are coming out just for the mailbox, add the service call. Service calls in Phoenix typically run $95 to $125 during regular business hours. More in what a Phoenix locksmith costs.

Mailbox Locks in Other Valley Cities
We do this work all over the Valley, not just Gilbert. Cluster boxes in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler and Queen Creek all use the same handful of cam locks, and our trucks carry them. Gilbert is just where we do the most of it.

Mailbox Lock Questions
Can a locksmith change my mailbox lock?
Yes, for your own compartment in a cluster box, or for a standalone mailbox at the curb. The lock on your door is yours or your HOA’s. The carrier door and the parcel lockers belong to USPS, and a locksmith can’t touch those.
Do I need USPS to replace my mailbox key?
Not for your compartment. People assume the Post Office handles it, which is why they wait in line for an answer they can’t get there. Bring us the lock, or we’ll come to the box.
How much does a mailbox lock replacement cost?
About $60 for the lock and the labor. Bring the lock to a shop and that is it. If we come to you just for the mailbox, add the service call, which in Phoenix typically runs $95 to $125 during regular business hours. Having us do it while we are already rekeying your house is the cheapest way.
Can I get a copy of my mailbox key made?
Yes, if you have a working key. We cut mailbox keys at all four shops. Bring the key and proof you live at the address.
What if I just moved into a home with a cluster mailbox?
Change the lock. The previous owner, their family and whoever else had a copy can still open your mail otherwise. Do it at the same time you rekey the house.
